Had a wonderful time at the CGOA ChainLink Convention in Buffalo, NY.

Took two classes: Advance Freeform Crochet and Knit with Myra Wood and Freeform Crochet Lace also with Myra Wood.

It' always a pleasure to see old and new friends at these get togethers.

Oops silly me, it was one of my hats that received an honorable mention....must have been all those good pain meds the hospital in Buffalo gave me for my darn shoulder.

2009 International Freeform Guild's Show: Four Seasons

Another year and another terrific exhibition by the fiber artists of the International Freeform Guild (International Freeform Group on Yahoo). This years theme was: Four Seasons.

The 2009 show includes 52 freeform fiber artists. These artist come from all over the world. The work is fabulous and ranges from freeform scrumbles to garments, to dolls, to landscapes.

Stop by and the International Freeform Guild's site and look for Four Seasons and click to enter. You can click on the individual pictures to go to that particular artist's work or click on Index by Name and view each artist's work. While you are on the site please visit all of the previous exhibitions if you haven't seen them yet.

SEEMS THAT I'VE BEEN AWAY FOR A LONG TIME

Well, not really, I've been here. However, my internet connection decided to take little "day trips" and was not behaving. Connection for five minutes, no connection for an hour, going on and off whenever it wanted to, staying on when it wanted to....finally the repair person came along and the problem is solved (fingers crossed)

News, well CGOA convention in Buffalo is in August and yes I'm going.....all the people, all the classes, all the yarn and Niagara Falls! Ok, yes I know, strange combo, but I haven't been to Niagara Falls since around 1966 with the Girl Scouts....I'm sure the area has changed...and I want to do the boat thing by the falls, didn't get to do that with the Girl Scouts. Ok, let's face it, I'm a lot older.

Working my fingers to the bone with the crochet hook and yarn.....did a few craft shows and they were very disappointing, one show actually didn't even have any people show up...guess it is the economy.

It's suppose to rain today, but it is icing instead....can't go anywhere so I sat down at the computer and starting "traveling" through Etsy again. Look what I found!

Netamir's Bobilina Studio. Now if you know me you know my love for birds and my obsession for Mary Jane Shoes...and Netamir has a shop that has both and some other loving items.

To best describe the shop, I thought the artist's own words would be the best.

"My work combines the disciplines of traditional textile crafts with the visual arts; sculpture, painting and photography.
After graduating from my fashion design studies in 2003 (Shenkar Institute of Design) and following several years of work in commercial clothing companies I decided, in 2005, to devote myself to a more creative and artistic work-path.
At first I created crochet dolls and sold them to collectors via ETSY. The creation of textile dolls then extended itself to installation where these dolls were part of a space that I formed. My installations are a grouping of the dolls, objects made of textile as well as photography.
I am also still developing in the craft and design front, designing and creating collectible dolls as well as slippers shoes handbags and accessories;
My accessories collection began after people who saw my dolls on the Internet admired and “envied” the unique style I fashioned for my characters and requested I create these in full scale for their use. This is how I started my accessory collection. All these are hand made, and are each a singular blend of sewing, embroidery and crochet."

Yes they are! I am always in awe of the wonderfully talented people I meet on etsy.

A while back Kay Malouff (alsatiagray on etsy)purchased one of my freeform hats on etsy. She recently contacted me to tell me how many compliments she received when she wore the hat at the Great Basin National Park in Nevada where she recently had been chosen this year's Artist-in-residence. As the artist-in-residence she spent what became a six week stint to design and create a 33 sq ft. stained glass for their new visitor's center.

I am so impressed. The stain glass window is fabulous, very impressive. So I just had to post here about it. Below are some pics of the stain glass that is now part of the new visitor center at Great Basin National Park and also some links to Kay's website and her etsy shop (please see links below the pictures).

In Kay's own words: "this project is not indicative of the usual AIR project; artists are required to donate a piece of their work for the priviledge of being chosen; but this park had recently built a new visitors' center & the top windows were a problem as far as window-coverings because of sun-glare. The lower windows have retractable shades. So when they chose me; they asked if I would consider doing this project if they bought my supplies."

Last fall Kay did an AIR stint at Mesa Verde Nat'l Park here in CO, and did a smaller portable piece which can be found on her celadonglass.com site (link below).

GREAT IDEA FOR FREEFORM CROCHET ARTISTS

As a freeform crocheter/knitter have you ever been stumped when trying to decide how certain colors would work together?

For years I have used a small kaleidoscope which I purchased as a necklace. I just place all the yarns I want to use in a freeform project together and look at them through my necklace kaleidoscope. In the kaleidoscope pattern you can see just how well all the colors work together.

I haven't seen a necklace like mine since, so I was pleasantly surprised when Mel of Felt-Up Designs on Etsy purchased one of my hats on Etsy. I went to take a peek at Mel's shop and there I saw necklace kaleidoscopes. I just had to post and let you all know that these great kaleidoscope necklaces are available at:

Well, it’s no longer a big secret. The challenge called the 2008 International Freefrom Fiberart Guild Challenge, “Through Our Eyes is now online at:

This beautiful presentation was put together by Myra Woods and represents pieces by Myra and 34 other fiber artists, all members of the International Freeform Fiberart Guild.

And Myra came up with an added surprise, not only is the exhibit online for all to see, but there is a companion book available for purchase, hardcover or softcover, which includes photos of each piece and either a poem or writing for each piece.

One hundred percent of the profits, that is a $10.00 donation per book, will go to the Women for Women International. You can learn more about this dedicated group at:

FREEFORM CROCHET CLASS

On April 13, 2008 I had the unique experience of teaching a beginning freeform crochet class. What a blast....I had so much fun teaching this class....because I had four terrific students that made it easy and a great shop and shop owner (Sheila of Stix-n-Stitches in Montclair, NJ), thanks again Sheila for this terrific opportunity!) who made it all happen.

I had brought some of my freeform crochet lace wrist cuffs as an example (picture below).

We went over basic freeform shapes and then I let them "go" as I gave them suggestions and they each made some reallly terrific first time pieces.

I was so honored and totally blown away when I saw this hat made by Nikki: she said I was one of the people who inspired her to make it, the other person being Dreamwoven, who makes absolutely fab art hats. Nikki does all sorts of work, sewing, embroidery, macrame, needlepoint, heirloom sewing, quilting, beading and silk dyeing, and she says she has fallen in love with knitting; I say the falling in love with knitting really shows....If anyone is a member of Ravelry you can people search Knikki there and see some Nikki's other projects.

It's Cisco's First Birthday

Remember this cute little guy. I posted his pics when he was eight weeks old and again at four months old. Well, on Wed. 1/29/08, Cisco will be 1 year. Time flies when your chasing a chiahuahua around. And I have gotten very good a crocheting with him hanging over my left arm; has to be right in the middle of everything. Oh yes, that's the Jack Russell "Purdy" hiding in the back.

Recently I received a new wooden crochet hook which I purchased via an ebay auction; I also purchased a hairpin from the same artist with the intent of using it as a shawl pin.

If you read an earlier post of mine you would know how much I love wooden crochet hooks as I have a large collection.

I'm really excited about this artist, Luis F. Gonzalez of Art-in-Crafts in Costa Rica. His work is beautiful and he ships the hooks and hairpins if a wooden box, a very nice presentation, and he is great to do business with.

I'm posting a picture of my new hook, a size J and the hairpin.

As you can see, I'm making a freeform poncho. Using a sage green cotton/acrylic blend worsted weight yarn for the mesh part of the poncho as well as some of the venetian leaves. The rest of the leaves are made with a glitter light worsted weight yarn, pale green. The pictures show the poncho with the leaves pinned on. I did finish it, but found out that I had placed some of the leaves on the wrong side, didn't look right, so I undid it all. Now I'm in the process of redoing the leaves.

Been busy, very busy. New job keeps me busy, which should calm down soon. Hitting the hooks and needles as soon as I can finish the dinner dishes; trying to get some items done so they can be posted here.

Went to King of Prussia for CGOA, what a blast! Saw Margaret H., Prudence Mapstone, Myra Wood, Mel, Pirkko, Carol and many, many more friends. Overwhelmed by all the talent.

Working, working, working...

Just spent the whole weekend working on scrumbles for a jacket. The pattern I will be using is from a jacket made for me by a friend. As soon as able, I will post pictures of the original jacket and the scrumbles I have so far.

Just one more month to CGOA in Valley Forge. Looking forward to seeing friends and all the talented crocheters out there.

New cat arrived on 6/8/06; went to the vet with one of my cat's for his shots and one of the vets introduced me to an 11 year old female who needed a home; yep, it was a setup, I'm an easy mark, so will post picture when she comes out from under the bed; it's a bit overwhelming for her with the three male cats.

Over the edge....

One might say that I am over the edge. At present I have over 50 of these handmade wooden crochet hooks (here are pictures of 47 of the hooks) from various woodworking artisans. However, each and everyone of them is work of art; they are wonderful to use and great to look at. All different sizes, some are marked by size, most are not, which is OK when doing freeform crochet because there are no rules, just what works for you.

Inspiration from a rainy day, or do I spend to much time thinking about freeform crochet?

Recently the suggestion to look at things around us and think how one would interpret them into freeform crochet was posted on the Yahoo Freeform Crochet group. The day after the suggestion was posted I found myself driving around our town in the pouring and I do mean pouring rain. Very gloomy and grey; but I started to notice all the really green trees and other vegitation mixed in with the dogwood trees and all the flowering bushes, most of which were purplish in color. What a contrast. When I got home I started "scrumbling and came up with this free form flower scrumble.

Miss Kitty, aka Evil Kitty, Little Girl, Slut Kitty, Lump Kitty. Part Maine Coon Cat, part, well your guess is as good as any and ALL BOY, yep, that's right she or excuse me he is all boy. When we took Miss Kitty for the first shots when she, oh yeh he, was a kitten the vet we saw told us the kitten was a girl. We then took him for his rabies shot and our regular vet said, guess what, this is a boy! Talk about embarrassing! So Miss Kitty is male and since he answers to Miss Kitty, he will always be Miss Kitty and we still call him Little Girl. Occupations: Yarn Thief, Furniture Accessory, Window Dressing. Yes, he is multi-talented, and probably will need a shrink one of these days. He was born April 15, 2005 and by the time he was six months old he was bigger than both of the other "boys". As you can see from the picture, he is not your average cat; notice the way he sleeps, doesn't curl up like other cats. Ignore the date of the original post; I had to update the info when the gender error became a fact of life.
